Join MAA for a winter ski or snowshoe attempt on Lassen Peak! This mountain gets a surprising amount of snow and this climb is scenic and non-technical. Prior winter camping experience is helpful (MTN 2). Loaner gear may be available. We have room for 8. Hope to have you out with us!

SCREENED EVENT: Please join the waitlist. Attendees will be selected based on skill proficiency and experience. Those registered will be notified. 

DETAILS:

  • What's happening: Winter climb Lassen Peak 10,463 SE Ridge, overnight from Helen Lake. TH to Helen Lake 6.1 miles, 1500' gain. Helen Lake to summit 3 miles, 2,300' gain. Total elevation gain 3,800'
  • Where to meet: Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center one mile north, southwest entrance. There are campground options in Red Bluff and nearby the Lassen National Park entrance

  • Minimum / Maximum: 3/8
  • What to bring: Tent*, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, stove*, food for 36 hours, hot drinks, 4 layers for upper body, 3 for lower body including shell layers, 2 pair gloves, mittens, skis / snowshoes, poles, ice axe*, crampons*, helmet, boots. (*these items may be provided by MAA and others, not everyone will need to bring their own, but please provide for yourself if possible.) 
  • Medical: If you have any medical conditions pertinent to your participation on this event, please inform the event leaders after registration.

ITINERARY:

  • Saturday, December 29th: Meet at the southwest visitor center at 8:00 am. Logistics, gear, details. Leave at 9:00 a.m. and ski / snowshoe / hike up the road, taking the "ranger cutoff" continuing to Helen Lake 6.1 miles. Set up camp, eat, prep, rest. 
  • Sunday, December 30th: With an early start leave camp continuing up the road to the SE ridge to summit Lassen. Descend, break camp, head back.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

  • In order to register you must be a Base, Peak, or Apex member.
  • Event leaders are experienced volunteers, but may not be certified guides.
  • This event is free of charge. MAA receives no direct financial gain for organizing and supporting this event.
  • Participant safety is our top priority. The itinerary described is the plan; however, circumstances beyond the leader's control may necessitate changes.
  • The event begins and ends at the trailhead. MAA does not insure ridesharing or other travel arrangements and bears no responsibility for them. Carpooling, ride sharing, or anything similar is strictly a private arrangement among individuals.
  • MAA event leaders carry communication devices and a medical kit; The primary event leader has current wilderness first aid and CPR training as well as MAA policy training.
