Join MAA members at Tamarack Peak near Tahoe for some scenic backcountry skiing. This is one of the most accessible peaks with a variety of friendly bowls and terrain. Current Avalanche 1 training and avy gear required to attend. We have room for 8. Hope to have you out with us!

SCREENED EVENT: Please join the waitlist. Attendees will be selected based on skill proficiency and experience shown on MAA profile, including evidence of Avy Level 1 and equipment. Those registered will be notified.

DETAILS:

  • What's happening: Backcountry skiing on Tamarack Peak, laps on bowls and ridges with 600' vert skiable terrain. Less than 1 mile approach, elevations from 8,600 to 9,900 feet. From the parking lot, skin due west through the sparse, rolling forest, aiming for the saddle between Tamarack and Galena Peaks. From here, turn south (left) and find the ridgeline to Tamarack’s summit. Be sure to remember the ascent route and surrounding landscape for the last descent to the car. The parking lot is hidden out of view behind a small ridge for most of the way back.
  • Where to meet: 8:00 am, roadside parking with room for over 20 cars located on Highway 431, 1 mile east of the highway’s summit. This parking area is 15.5 miles west of the 395-431 junction near Reno, and 9 miles east of the 28-431 junction near Incline Village.

  • What to bring: Skis, boots, skins, poles, avy beacon, probe, shovel, appropriate winter clothing and layers, lunch, water, pack and sense of adventure!
  • Medical: If you have any medical conditions pertinent to your participation on this event, please inform the event leaders after registration.
  • Additional Info: While winter driving expect storms, carry chains and plan extra time for treacherous conditions.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
  • In order to register you must be a Base, Peak, or Apex member.
  • Event leaders are experienced volunteers, but may not be certified guides.
  • This event is free of charge. MAA receives no direct financial gain for organizing and supporting this event.
  • Participant safety is our top priority. The itinerary described is the plan; however, circumstances beyond the leader's control may necessitate changes.
  • The event begins and ends at the trailhead. MAA does not insure ridesharing or other travel arrangements and bears no responsibility for them. Carpooling, ride sharing, or anything similar is strictly a private arrangement among individuals.
  • MAA event leaders carry communication devices and a medical kit; The primary event leader has current wilderness first aid and CPR training as well as MAA policy training.
