Join MAA to climb the Sierra classic East Face route on Mt. Whitney. This is moderate alpine rock route wows climbers with the incredible exposure and adventurous traversing. We'll be going early season, expect snow on the route and the approach / descent. Participants will need to be experienced multi-pitch alpine trad leaders. Loaner gear may be available. Hope to have you out with us!

EXPEDITION TRAINING: Confirmed members of the Bugaboos 2019 Expedition team will have priority RSVP on this date.

DETAILS:

  • What's happening: Mt. Whitney 14,500' East Face route, III, 5.7, steep snow approach / descent, snow possible on some of the pitches. We'll be climbing with packs and crampons, axes. Up to 13 pitches, approx. 1,000' ascent. 3 days to allow for travel, weather contingency
  • Where to meet: Whitney Portal road closure pull out near the town of Lone Pine.
  • Event Leaders: Kelvin Nguyen, kelvin@mountainascent.org, and Doug Harris
  • Minimum / Maximum: 2,5
  • What to bring: Rock climbing shoes, harness, helmet, belay device, 4 locking carabiners, slings, cordelette, prusik, crampons, ice axe, 15-30 liter climbing pack, approach shoes / boots compatible with your crampons, food, water, sleeping pad, sleeping bag, headlamp, trekking pole(s). Group gear such as rock protection, ropes, tents, stove, etc. will be decided at the trailhead. If you have something you can share please bring it. 
  • Medical: If you have any medical conditions pertinent to your participation on this event, please inform the event leaders after registration.

ITINERARY:

  • DAY 1, Saturday, April 27th: Meet at Whitney Portal road closure 5:00 am, logistics. Ascend road and then north fork of Lone Pine creek trail to Basecamp at Upper Boy Scout Lake or Iceberg Lake.
  • DAY 2, Sunday, April 28th: Early start, climb route. Descend Mountaineer's route to basecamp, and continue back to trailhead and bottom of the road.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

  • In order to register you must be a Base, Peak, or Apex member.
  • Event leaders are experienced volunteers, but may not be certified guides.
  • This event is free of charge. MAA receives no direct financial gain for organizing and supporting this event.
  • Participant safety is our top priority. The itinerary described is the plan; however, circumstances beyond the leader's control may necessitate changes.
  • The event begins and ends at the trailhead. MAA does not insure ridesharing or other travel arrangements and bears no responsibility for them. Carpooling, ride sharing, or anything similar is strictly a private arrangement among individuals.
  • MAA event leaders carry communication devices and a medical kit; The primary event leader has current wilderness first aid and CPR training as well as MAA policy training.
