Join MAA for a spring climb of Mount Tinemaha in the Eastern Sierra. This 12,520' peak stands in the shadow of the more imposing 14er Split Mountain, but provides great views of the Owens Valley and is a good early season, high elevation ascent. Overnight snow camping, SNOW 2, MTN 1 or equivalent snow climbing skills required along with excellent fitness. Loaner gear may be available. We have room for 6. Hope to have you out with us!

DETAILS:

  • What's happening: Climb Mt. Tinemaha (12,520') via the south drainage, starting from the east. Snow climb with class 2 scramble along the way and near the top. 4WD vehicles with good clearance are required to reach to the Red Lake trailhead.
  • Where to meet: Country Kitchen at 181 N Main St, Big Pine, CA 93513
  • Event Leaders: Mihai Giurgiulescu and Kevin Koenig
  • Minimum / Maximum: 4/6
  • What to bring: Mountaineering boots, crampons fit to boots, ice axe, helmet, snowshoes, backpack (40-55L), 4-season tent or bivouac, stove, fuel, food for 2 days, sleeping bag, pad, trekking poles, appropriate layers (insulating, wind and waterproof), down jacket, gloves, gaiters, warm hat or balaclava, sun hat or covering, sunglasses or glacier glasses, map, compass, bowl, spoon, personal items. Some items will be shared between participants and will be selected at the trailhead. 
  • Medical: If you have any medical conditions pertinent to your participation on this event, please inform the event leaders after registration.
Additional Info:
  • As the trip begins outside the usual quota season in Inyo National Forest, wilderness permits are free and self-issued. The Event Leaders will procure the permits.

ITINERARY:

  • DAY 1: April 13th - Meet in Big Pine at 7 AM. Meeting location is Country Kitchen (see address above). Logistics, gear, vehicles. Drive about an hour on dirt roads to trailhead. Hike/snowshoe up to Red Lake, establish camp. 
  • DAY 2: April 14th - Climb to the summit via the south drainage. Return to break down camp and return to trailhead.
  • Approximate statistics for entire trip are 13 miles round trip with 6000' gain.
  • NOTE: Inclement weather in the week prior to this trip will result in its cancellation. The already rough road to Red Lake trailhead is subject to washouts and damage from the action of streams/snow melt. Event Leaders will make all efforts to determine if road is passable, but in case it is not the trip will be cancelled.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

  • In order to register you must be a Base, Peak, or Apex member.
  • Event leaders are experienced volunteers, but may not be certified guides.
  • This event is free of charge. MAA receives no direct financial gain for organizing and supporting this event.
  • Participant safety is our top priority. The itinerary described is the plan; however, circumstances beyond the leader's control may necessitate changes.
  • The event begins and ends at the trailhead. MAA does not insure ridesharing or other travel arrangements and bears no responsibility for them. Carpooling, ride sharing, or anything similar is strictly a private arrangement among individuals.
  • MAA event leaders carry communication devices and a medical kit; The primary event leader has current wilderness first aid and CPR training as well as MAA policy training.
